Description of Holy Well and Landscape Setting

This holy well is located about 150 metres north-west of the the small parking area at the ruined Formoyle Chapel. The location given for the well is an area of disturbed ground with scattered stonework remains. The original well was presumably associated with the chapel. There are no visible signs of any water source or pool. The area is being used to feed cattle and it would appear the well is now lost.

Saint and Feast Day Associated with Holy Well

The well is known as Tobar Bran, but nothing is known of the practices at this holy well in the past. Details of pattern days at the well and any cures associated with the site have fallen out of memory and do not appear in historical records.

Natural Heritage around the Holy Well

The site is located at the bottom of an area of very rough grazing which is steeply sloping. The area has the typical boundaries found in this part of County Clare – loose stone walls as well as mixed hedgerows and trees.

Additional Information:

This well can be seen on the RMP (Record of Monuments and Places) database but does not feature on the 1842 Ordnance Survey map.
