Tobernasool, Tobar na Súil, The Eye Well, Burrane Upper

Townland: Burrane Upper, Killimer

Description of Holy Well and Landscape Setting

This holy well could originally be found in scrubland after the turn onto the Upper Burrane Road. The well was accidentally destroyed in the last 10 years. The well lay close to the road and had been long out of use. It would seem that lack of awareness of the holy well led to its accidental filling in. No trace of the well remains today.

Saint and Feast Day Associated with Holy Well

Very little is remembered about this holy well. It would seem to have been principally a ‘tobar leighis‘, or ‘health well’ to treat sore or tired eyes. People would come to the holy well to bathe their eyes with the water and would likely have taken some water home with them.

Natural Heritage around the Holy Well

The well stood on a secondary road, with typical hedge trees and plants around.
