Townland: Rinemackaderrig, Moyarta
Description of Holy Well and Landscape Setting
The well is west of the 15th century McMahon Tower House at Carrigaholt. It lies on the stony shoreline, close to Carrigaholt Cottage. Unlike the nearby well Tobercreadane, it is not signposted. The site has been recently fenced and is not always accessible due to tides.
Saint and Feast Day associated with Holy Well
This is another well dedicated to Saint Seanán of Inis Cathaigh, whose island lies a little further east in the Shannon Estuary. 8th March is Saint Seanán’s feast day though it is unlikely there has been pilgrimage activity at this holy well in a long time. There is little memory of this well remaining.
Natural Heritage around the Holy Well
The well is located on a very stony shoreline. There is no significant foliage at the site, other than kelp and seaweeds.
Heritage Attractions Nearby
The village of Carrigaholt is nearby. To the west of the village is a Napoleonic gun battery. Further west again is the fascinating coastline of Loop Head with its geology, sunken forests and archaeology. Good food, especially fish, may be sampled locally
Additional Information
The well is beside the fishing village of Carrigaholt. The area around the village was among the last areas in Clare to be Irish speaking. Near the village, The O’Curry College, Coláiste Eoghain Uí Chomhraídhe, still functions as an Irish language summer school.
