Description of Holy Well and Landscape Setting

The well lies two fields from the Toonagh road, on the west side of Hell River, immediately before the bridge. The well site is only detectable from a fence put in place some time ago. No spring, stones or votive offerings mark the location.

Saint and Feast Day Associated with Holy Well

The well is dedicated to local Saint Neachtain. Very little about this saint is remembered in the local parish. Neachtain was a 5th century saint who was a contemporary of Saint Patrick and possibly even a relative. He is mostly associated with Cill-Uinche, County Louth and Fennor, County Meath. The Martyrology of Donegal records Saint Neachtain’s feast day as 2nd May.

Natural Heritage around the Holy Well

The well is situated a grazing field beside the local river.
