Description of  Holy Well and Landscape Setting

This holy well lies at the bottom right hand corner of a grazing field. Behind the field is a plantation of coniferous trees. The well area has a fenced approach and the well is secured against animals. It is contained in a well house, inside which are small statues and votive offerings. There is water in the well. Blue and white, the colours relating to the Virgin Mary,  are used on the holy well.

Saint and Feast Day Associated with Holy Well

As the name suggests, this well is associated with Saint Augustine. 28th August is Saint Augustine’s feast day. Traditionally the Rosary is said on the feast day, with one decade in Irish. The local vernacular sometimes describes the saint as Austin, a name still common in North Clare.

Natural Heritage around the Holy Well

The well site is protected by hedge shrubs and small trees. Three of four mature Scots pine trees stand in each corner. The fourth has snapped near the base sometime in the recent past. The wild grasses in the area had recently been sprayed.

Heritage Attractions Nearby

Kilmaley and Inch Villages are nearby. Slieve Callan is a little to the north. Milltown Malbay offers food and accommodation.
