In 2018, Archaeological Management Solutions Ltd., in Kilrush, County Clare were engaged in monitoring the demolition of Mountrivers Bridge, near Doonbeg.
As part of the project, Archaeological Management Solutions Ltd., was charged with an architectural heritage survey of the bridge, to record it for posterity. It was during this work that archaeologists discovered some interesting graffiti on the concrete coping of the parapet. ‘FREE Stater’ had been etched into the cement when it was still wet, indicating a connection to the Irish Civil War (1922-1923).
In this video, AMS archaeologist Bryn Coldrick tells the story, while the graffiti etching is now part of the collection at Clare Museum in Ennis.
